Een Koerden beschikken over in Turkije immers een hoogste posities mogen bereiken, bijvoorbeeld president, premier, vicepremier ofwel legerleider. In 1983 werd Turgut Ögaat premier betreffende Turkije. Hij was gedeeltelijk van Koerdische komaf en was tussen 1989 en 1993 president met nederland.[14] Onder zijn bewind verbeterde de situatie zichzelf enigszins en mocht bijvoorbeeld dit woord 'Koerden' alweer aangewend worden.
In 1984 begint de PKK aan een gewapende opstand en bestaan daar heel wat gevechten tussen een Koerden en het Turkse leger. Tienduizenden personen verliezen hun leven en complete Koerdische dorpen worden betreffende een kaart geveegd.
